ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer

ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer Helps Hide and Save

ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer brings opacity and cost efficiency to a wide range of paints and coatings.

Paints made with ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer offer marketable consumer benefits:

Architectural Exteriors

The unique weathering pattern of ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer offers notable exterior performance benefits, including:

  • Improved dirt-pickup resistance
  • Improved tint retention
  • Excellent film durability

Home Interiors

ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer may be used to replace even more TiO2 while maintaining gloss and sheen properties, burnish resistance and scrub resistance.

Solventborne Alkyds

Now formulators can use ROPAQUE™ DUAL Opaque Polymer to replace TiO2 and lower raw material costs in solventborne alkyd architectural paints. It also works in waterborne paints, providing the convenience of a single product for multiple paint lines.

Waterborne Wood Coatings

Save TiO2 and cost in primer and topcoat formulations while maintaining or improving hiding, durability and coating film properties.

A High Cost of Hiding

Adding more TiO2 to compensate for gaps and inefficiencies caused by crowding is a costly measure with diminishing returns. Dow Coating Materials offers a better way. ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer is a hiding pigment that replaces the most crowded – and least efficient – portion of TiO2 in paint. It optimizes formulation cost and paint performance. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is the primary white pigment used in paint to provide hiding. It’s very effective, but not very efficient.

Inefficiencies of TiO2

In typical paint, TiO2 distribution is random. As paint dries, crowding creates areas of high and low concentration. Where concentration is low, gaps in hiding may occur. Where concentration is high, overlap creates inefficiency.

A History of Hiding Innovation

Dow scientists have been seeking – and finding – better ways to hide for more than 50 years. We invented opaque polymer, a completely new category of white pigment, in the 1950s: It is the first and only synthetic hollow-sphere pigment for paint.

Today, ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer is maufactured in 17 countries on six continents. It is precisely engineered to optimize the air void, and it continues to set the industry standard for consistent quality, reliable supply and ongoing innovation in opaque-polymer technology.

TAMOL™ Dispersants improve TiO2 distribution in the grind phase. ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer replaces the most crowded TiO2 with a more efficient white pigment. EVOQUE™ Pre-Composite Polymer more evenly distributes remaining TiO2

How ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymer Works

Hard polymer shell contains water, air replaces water, resulting void causes light to scatter.
