A fresh perspective on hygienic wipes
There’s no question that cleaning and disinfecting are more important than ever. Or that nonwoven wipes play a major role. Demand continues to rise – along with the desire to be better individual and corporate citizens. So, what’s the answer? Polyethylene.
Wiping away the myths
When it comes to polyethylene (PE) and wipes, there are a lot of misconceptions. We’d like to help set the record straight.
MYTH: PE substrates are soft but not strong enough for wipes.
REALITY: Soft PE substrates exhibit the tensile strength and elongation needed for reliable wiping performance while adding premium touch and feel.
MYTH: PE substrates have poor abrasion resistance / high lint generation.
REALITY: PE-based wipes offer strong abrasion resistance / low lint generation, which can help extend useful life.
MYTH: PE substrates offer inadequate dirt pick-up.
REALITY: PE substrates offer adequate dirt pick-up for a broad range of cleaning and disinfecting needs.
MYTH: PE-based wipes cannot uptake or retain liquid for wet wipe applications.
REALITY: PE-based wipes can provide excellent liquid uptake, retention and release for wet wipe applications. This creates opportunities for both downgauging and reducing the amount of liquid formulation per package, which can help lower shipping weight as well as overall cost.
MYTH: PE is only suitable for bicomponent filament sheath.
REALITY: PE is well suited for uses far beyond bico sheath. In fact, it can offer excellent solutions for wipe substrates with mono PE, PE/PE bico, and PE meltblown nonwovens.
Typical values, not to be construed as specifications. Users should confirm results by their own tests.
Need more evidence?
For decades, our PE-based ASPUN™ Fiber Grade Resins have delivered outstanding performance for diapers and other absorbent hygiene products through a wide range of nonwoven solutions, including mono and bicomponent spunbonds, bico binder and staple fibers and meltblown fabrics.
Intensive research, development and testing have shown that using PE for wipes can offer manufacturers, brand owners and end-users the same benefits they experience in other PE-based hygiene applications.

Learn how PE-based substrates can combine excellent softness, performance and sustainability in nonwoven wipes.
Sustainable strength
Wipes based on our PE polymers can also help drive progress toward sustainability goals by:
- Lowering greenhouse gas emissions through reduced energy use and waste
- Offering multiple end-of-life options, including recyclability potential
- Creating shorter supply chains with fewer raw materials and sources
- Supporting forest conservation by eliminating the wood pulp and cellulose used in conventional wipes
- Enabling lower-cost products for increased access to prevent infections
