Most paints combine a binder, often an acrylic resin, that forms the film; pigments such as titanium dioxide for color and opacity; a carrier of water or solvent; and additives that fine-tune the finish. Dispersants, rheology modifiers, surfactants and defoamers are common additives that control how a paint flows, stores, and cures.
Start by defining the performance you need, such as durability, sheen, adhesion, open time, and other application properties along with the system you're formulating in, water- or solvent-based. Match each raw material to those targets and to your sustainability goals, like lower VOCs or incorporating bio-based carbon content.
