Offering High-Quality Topical Formulations
Formulating topicals is often about finding the right balance – stability, physical and mechanical properties, and rheology all matter. With CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEGs, you have access to a broad range of molecular weights, helping enable you to design formulations that meet your performance and patient experience goals.
Unlike oleaginous and absorption bases, polyethylene glycol (PEG) bases are water-soluble, non-staining, and non-greasy, making them an excellent choice for modern semi-solid formulations.

Versatile Hydrophilic Emollients & Humectants
Many dermatologic conditions are associated with dry, rough scaly skin. The topical vehicle should be selected to treat while supporting the natural skin’s barrier and hydration.
Traditional oleaginous bases rely on occlusion, while water‑soluble PEG-based systems offer a differentiated sensory and formulation approach and leverage the CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEGs’ well-established role as humectants/emollients in topical product design.
Traditional oleaginous bases work by trapping moisture through occlusion. Water‑soluble PEG-based systems take a different approach. They provide a distinct sensory feel and more flexible formulation options. CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEGs are well established as humectants and emollients in topical product design.
Hydrophilic emollients and humectants can support performance across common semi-solid formulations:
- Lotions & creams: add slip, improve application feel, and support uniform ingredient distribution.
- Gels: help manage solvent balance and sensory while supporting clarity/consistency targets.
- Ointments & semisolids: enable water‑soluble, greaseless base options where appropriate.
PuraGuard™ Propylene Glycol (PG) USP/EP complements PEG-based systems by serving as a skin-conditioning humectant and fine-tuning application feel.

Hydrophilic solvent systems that unlock topical performance
With nearly 40% of marketed drugs and up to 90% of pipeline candidates exhibiting poor solubility, achieving adequate bioavailability through topical delivery remains one of formulation’s most persistent challenges.
To overcome these solubility barriers. build high-performance topical vehicles with CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs) and Methoxypolyethylene Glycols (MPEGs), and PuraGuard™ Propylene Glycol (PG) USP/EP – a flexible toolkit for solubilizing actives, improving uniformity, and tuning delivery.
- Solvent / solubilizer: PEGs and MPEGs support API solubilization and uniformity in creams, lotions, gels, pastes, and ointments.
- Target the skin: PEG-based vehicles contribute to delivery strategy, including improved skin deposition/retention in certain solvent systems.
- Boost permeation: PG adds proven co‑solvent flexibility and API penetration enhancement, helping optimize transport for select molecules

Reduce degradation risks, protect product shelf life
Stainless steel is widely used in pharmaceutical manufacturing; however, during topical formulation processing it can introduce trace levels of metal ions. Even at ppb-ppm levels, these metals may catalyze oxidative degradation of active ingredients and excipients, contributing to discoloration, peroxide formation, and affect overall formulation stability.
VERSENE™ NA Chelating Agent helps safeguard topical formulations by chelating reactive metal ions, supporting product quality and stability throughout manufacturing and shelf life.
- Suitable for pharmaceutical formulations
- Extends operational life of in-process liquids
- Stabilizes color, fragrance, and other ingredients used in topical formulations
- Effective at low concentrations (0.05-0.2%)
VERSENE™ NA Chelating Agent
It is a partially neutralized salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in a dry, white crystalline form. As a chelating agent, it chemically binds trace metals that can affect the color, flavor, clarity, and shelf life of finished products, rendering them inactive. It is utilized broadly for bioprocessing, pharmaceutical, personal care, and direct food additive applications. Country of Origin: United States of America.
PEGs as building blocks for PEG derived excipients
Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs) and Methoxypolyethylene Glycols (MPEGs) can serve as precursors for PEG‑derived excipients manufactured via esterification, supporting tailored functionality beyond the base polymer.
PEGs and MPEGs are routinely esterified with fatty acids to create PEG‑esters that offer balanced hydrophilic–lipophilic performance. Examples include PEG‑stearates and specialty esters such as Methoxy PEG‑12 Eicosapentaenoate, valued for texture control, emulsification, and sensory tuning.
These PEG‑derived esters are widely used in topical pharmaceutical and consumer health products, including creams, lotions, dermatologic gels, and lightweight moisturizers, where they support stability, spreadability, and skin feel.
CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEGs and MPEGs can be efficiently transformed via esterification into valuable PEG‑derived excipients – highlighting their versatility as foundational raw materials for advanced topical formulations.
