Consumers prefer gelatin capsules over other dosage forms, so the development of drugs in this form is more relevant than ever.
CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ LPEG and MPEGs are pharmaceutical excipients which can be used in the manufacturing of capsules as hydrophilic fillers for solubilization of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), but also as plasticizer in the coating of the gelatin capsules.
CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs) have a long history of use in capsule formulations because they meet all compendial requirements and have the below benefits.
Facilitating formulation of gelatin capsules when working with poorly soluble APIs.
Selecting our low aldehydes grades, helps reduce risk of cross linking of the shell.
Allowing more consistent manufacturing and longer shelf-life of drugs.

Available low aldehyde grades
- Minimize cross linking of the gelatin shell:
- Low aldehyde and low ethylene glycol PEG 300
- Low aldehyde and low ethylene glycol PEG 400
- Low aldehyde and low ethylene glycol PEG 600
- Maintain low EG levels throughout processing by following Dow’s simple handling guidance.
Carriers and filler
- Improve the solubility of poorly soluble APIs by using:
- 5-50% CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEG 300
- 5-50% CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEG 400
- 5-50% CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEG 600
- Example poorly soluble APIs: Acyclovir.

- Improve the elasticity of the soft gelatin capsule shells:
- 5-30% CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEG 300
- 5-30% CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEG 400
- 5-50% CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEG 600
- 5-30% CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEG 1000
- 5-30% CARBOWAX™ SENTRY™ PEG 1450
- The optimum quantity of the PEG in the formulation depends on the rest of the components. We recommend formulators to calculate their optimum dosage, and we are here to give guidance.
Stabilizers
- Reduce degradation risks:
- – 1% VERSENE™ NA Edetate Disodium
- – 1% VERSENE™ NA Edetate Disodium
- EDTA prevents chemical degradation of oxidation sensitive drugs which process is catalyzed by free metals in gelatin, such as iron.
