Pharmaceutical Heat Management
Precision Thermal Control for end-to-end Pharmaceutical Manufacturing across modalities from synthesis to fill-finish
We provide a broad portfolio of heat transfer fluids and application expertise that enables precise temperature control across chemical synthesis and fermentation for APIs and precursors, lyophilization, vaccine production, and reaction control.
Backed by decades of thermal science, Dow’s portfolio helps improve process reliability, product quality, and operational efficiency in highly controlled pharmaceutical environments.
Solutions Across Applications
Enhancing Lyophilization Performance
Lyophilization (freeze‑drying) is a key step in sterile fill finish pharmaceutical manufacturing. It removes water from frozen drug products under low temperature and vacuum conditions to maintain structural stability and efficacy, especially for sensitive biologics found in vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, and protein-based therapies.
Silicone fluids enable this process, effective with wide operating temperature ranges, for precise control of manufacturing steps.
Dow provides free annual analysis to qualifying customers.
Benefits
- Excellent thermal stability and reliable low‑temperature performance (e.g., SYLTHERM™ XLT Heat Transfer Fluid used at –100°C and heated up to +260°C).
- Silicone fluids are not water diluted, have very low toxicity, and odor. In the United States, are not listed as reportable under SARA Title III, Section 313.
- Silicone fluids are biostatic, noncorrosive, and show better resistance to oxidation when compared to a glycol-based alternative.
- Silicones are used for low temperature conditions due to their very low viscosity; glycols may have viscosity increase so much so that the application is not viable.
- Silicone fluids offer superior fluid lifetime and performance vs. glycol-based fluids.
