With new low-VOC binders, the reduction of co-solvent in formulations, and demands for increased speed in paint production and application, foam control is an ongoing challenge for today's waterborne paint and ink formulators.Defoaming may be easy to achieve in some cases, but incompatibility between the defoamer and the formulation often leads to film defects.Dow has applied its deep knowledge of silicone chemistry and extensive antifoam know-how to produce a range of waterborne defoamers that couple high levels of foam control efficiency with low levels of film defects.

Solutions for your waterborne foam control challenges

For versatility – DOWSIL™ 69 Additive (an emulsion) and DOWSIL™ 8590 Additive (a self-dispersible compound) are the mainstays of our new range of waterborne antifoams and defoamers. These versatile silicone additives are designed for use in inks, overprint varnishes and all types of premium industrial and architectural paints with low to medium pigment volume concentrations.

DOWSIL™ 8590 Additive is a self-dispersible silicone antifoam compound that offers good compatibility coupled with good defoaming efficiency – even at low temperatures. The compound’s low viscosity facilitates accurate dosing and easy handling in both the laboratory and the factory. It may be added at any time during the process, from pigment grind to paint let-down. It can be used in various waterborne coatings such as paints for wood or architectural wall coatings. The excellent defoaming performance of DOWSIL™ 8590 Additive in flexographic ink illustrates the product’s high versatility.

  • For more challenging foam problems – DOWSIL™ 8603 Additive may be recommended.
  • For systems with co-solvent – DOWSIL™ 8610 Additive offers a high level of compatibility.
  • For low-temperature applications – DOWSIL™ 8590 Additive and DOWSIL™ 8610 Additive provide effective foam control at low temperatures.
  • For excellent defoaming and compatibility – DOWSIL™ 8628 Additive possesses a novel technology that, in select binder systems, enables formulators to achieve excellent defoaming performance coupled with excellent compatibility.
  • For APEO-free formulating – All of the products in this range are formulated without APEO.
