Depolymerization (Polyurethane Chemical Recycling)
Recycling with depolymerization. Transforming end-of-life waste streams to new raw materials with recycled content.
Enabling Polyurethane Circularity with Renuva™ Recycled Content
Depolymerization recycling for polyurethanes is the only closed-loop recycling technology for end-of-life polyurethane waste; it enables PU circularity and helps advance innovation in different technologies, applications, and waste types. With our depolymerization capabilities, we can restore the value of waste and share that value with the industry.
From Automotive Waste to Worth
Valued for comfort, safety and fuel-efficiency, polyurethane foam is an essential part of automotive interiors. It is valued in automotive applications for its light weight, which contributes to fuel efficiency, and durability, as it is made to last the lifetime of the vehicle. Advancing circularity of polyurethane foams can play an increasingly important role for OEMs and automotive component manufacturers in achieving their own sustainability and decarbonization goals.
Dow and Gruppo Fiori develop recycling process for automotive polyurethane waste
Dow and Gruppo Fiori unveil a new process to recover polyurethane from end-of-life vehicles without disassembly, merging materials science with automotive recycling expertise.
Traditional recycling of vehicles, requires disassembly of automotive components, creating cost and complexity for recyclers.
Dow and Gruppo Fiori’s innovation eliminates this dismantling step, producing a simplified recovery for PU waste stream with the purity needed to enable depolymerization. This innovation drives toward a circular automotive supply chain by:
- Obtaining a polyurethane waste stream suitable for depolymerization (chemical recycling) from end-of-life vehicles without disassembly.
- Keeping valuable polyurethane foam out of landfills and reintegrating it into productive
- Enabling industrial-scale recycling and reuse of polyurethane in mobility application.
- Facilitating the creation of polyol materials with recycled content.
- Helping enable compliance with upcoming mandatory recycled content requirements from End of Life Vehicle Regulation (ELVR), as well as OEM’s sustainability goals.
This process addresses dismantling/recycling/recovery as well as enabling more recycled content in new flexible polyurethanes automotive components such as interiors, seating and acoustics.
