Day 1 & 2, Track 1: Materials Development

October 4-5, 2021

Mark Jablonka and two other industry experts facilitated a technical session track focusing on innovations in polypropylene, reinforcements, additives and polyolefin elastomers which are expanding automotive TPO applications to enable OEMs to take advantage of their benefits. 

Day 2 & 3, Track 2: Sustainability, Reuse, Recovery and Recycling

October 5-6, 2021

Significant amounts of polyolefins are now being recycled and used in several automotive parts, all meeting OEM specifications. Efforts to reclaim larger parts such as bumper fascia, interior trim and instrument panels are challenging and require unique solutions. This technical session track, which included 15 informative presentations, was co-chaired by Mark Allen who along with other industry experts provided insights on sustainability, reuse, recovery and recycling. 

Technical Session: Reducing Thermal Expansion of a TPO Panel by Polyolefin Elastomer Selection

As part of the Materials Development track, Mark Jablonka discussed the replacement of metal with TPO in exterior closure applications, highlighting the benefits of ENGAGE™ 11000 Series Polyolefin Elastomers. These advanced materials not only offer increased toughness, but also deliver lower thermal expansion characteristics, making them an ideal choice for high quality TPO panels that help reduce weight and costs while expanding design freedom compared to metal.

Technical Session: Pursuit of Sustainability Through Life Cycle Thinking

Decisions about the production or purchase of products have historically been driven by price and performance. Sustainability concerns are new drivers, representing aspirations for the future and issues that are poorly described by economics today. Many concerns can be quantified by using the concepts of life cycle thinking and life cycle assessment (LCA), such as product carbon footprints. This talk by Dr. Rich Helling focused on these ideas, providing examples of how they can be used to see challenges, trade-offs and ways to pursue sustainability.

Mark leads polyolefins and polyolefin elastomers application development efforts within Dow’s North America transportation segment. He is a member of the Society of Plastics Engineers Thermoplastic Polyolefins Technical Committee and a member of the American Chemistry Council’s Mobility Committee. Mark has over 23 years of experience in Dow’s polyolefins business in application development. He holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University at Buffalo and a master's in chemical engineering and MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Rich advises the industry on the proper use of LCA and related tools to identify opportunities for innovation, differentiate products in the marketplace and create sustainable value. Rich has been with Dow for almost 35 years. He holds a bachelor's degree from Harvey Mudd College with majors in engineering and history, a master's degree in chemical engineering practice from MIT and a doctorate in chemical engineering from MIT. He is an LCA Certified Professional.
