Sustainable packaging products to enable designing for recyclability

Plastics have revolutionized the way we live, and we’re incredibly proud to be a part of the driving force behind many of the innovations designed for recyclability to help reduce the carbon footprint in our world.
Since 2016, Dow has been honored to have products recognized by the Association of Plastic Recyclers’ prestigious APR Design® Recognition Program.
SURLYN™ Ionomers
SURLYN™ Ionomers bring more than just recyclability to the sustainability table. Their toughness, important functional properties, and exceptional adhesive aspects combine to make virtually every application a more sustainable one. How? In many ways: SURLYN™ Ionomers are one of the premier products for use in vacuum seal packaging. That reduces plastic packaging. Their barrier performance increases shelf life and helps reduce food waste. The ionomer adhesion creates dependable seals for less package failure, to again reduce waste and unsaleables. And the adhesive is efficient, requiring less resin for more adhesion.
One other consideration: the flexibility to use SURLYN™ Ionomers in a variety of applications makes them a sustainable choice for even more.
ROBOND™ Water-borne Adhesives
First, they’re water based. Solventless. That’s a big environmental plus from the start. They are also very efficient; they bond more while using less. Another sustainable feature. Next, they adhere extremely well to numerous substrates, but especially polyethylene – one of the most universally recyclable materials.
ROBOND™ Water-borne Adhesives are also amazingly diverse in their uses: rigid and flexible packaging, labels, construction, electronics, industrial lamination... That means their sustainable advantages are all the more important, positively affecting us everywhere these adhesives are used.
OPULUX™ Optical Finishes
Many times, a package’s recyclability is derailed by seemingly small details. For example, the shiny coating that makes it sparkle on the shelf. The more sustainable – and recyclable – alternative is found with OPULUX™ Optical Finishes. Whereas traditional options layer on a variety of chemical-based coatings, OPULUX™ Optical Finishes use a distinctive water-based delivery system to apply a thin film of uniformly dispersed acrylic beads.
The patented system creates enhanced optics for the finished product, while virtually eliminating VOCs and odors from the workplace. While packaging is the main application, OPULUX™ Optical Finishes can be utilized for a variety of other end uses, including paper and textile coatings, signage, labels, and more. And the coating is a recyclable component in any item in which it’s used.
RETAIN™ Polymer Modifiers
It does what it says: retains desired properties – including barrier functionality – in recycled films. Plus, it retains recycled films’ ability to be recycled further when the structures are designed for recyclability. What’s more, when used with typically non-recyclable components, such as EVOH or nylon, RETAIN™ modifiers combine to enable their recyclability, too.
RETAIN™ Polymer Modifiers greatly extend the industry’s ability to create more types of recyclable films for a greater number of end-use applications.
About the Association of Plastic Recyclers
The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), is a trade association representing the global plastics recycling industry.
The APR Design® Recognition Program is one of the most widely accepted measures for assessing recyclability in plastics packaging design worldwide. The Program spotlights technologies or package components that solve long-standing problems in sustainable package design and encourage wide use of such innovations.
