Building the circular economy step-by-step
When building the circular economy for plastic packaging, collaboration is the key to success.
Five companies – HP Indigo, Dow, Reifenhaeuser, Cadel and Karlville – have been working together to build a case to demonstrate that through applying joint know-how, it is possible to recycle one recyclable pouch into another high-quality pouch application.
The case presented is a PE-based barrier MDO-PE food pouch which was designed for recyclability (D4R) and recycled into a high-quality dishwasher MDO-PE pouch with 30% recycled contents in the final laminated film which is PE-based and recyclable again.
Can a pouch be a pouch again?
When working towards a circular economy for plastic packaging, collaboration is key. Here, we look at packaging designed for recycling.
Producing the recyclates for the second pouch involved a special deinking technology during recycling to achieve a high-quality resin outcome for the second pouch application. In the process, digital printing and industrial-scale production machinery was used. The Pack Studios concept plays a crucial role in enabling this concept.
What is special about this project is that thanks to the deinking you can do high-quality pouch-to-pouch recycling. And thanks to the usage of MDO-PE you can go back to a PE-based pouch concept.
The Film Innovation Center at Pack Studios Tarragona is uniquely positioned to help develop and test these new circular formats and validate commercial value up to industrial scale. Get in touch with us to run your own developments.
