Background

DOWLEX™ 2388 PE Resin is a type II PE-RT (Polyethylene of Raised Temperature Resistance) resin offering excellent strength. We believe no other polyethylene resin has been proven to perform like DOWLEX 2388 PE Resin in hot water pipes without being cross-linked. It is an ethylene-octene copolymer, produced by our proprietary Solution process and featuring a unique molecular structure with a controlled side chain distribution.

DOWLEX 2388 PE Resin provides improved hydrostatic strength and processability over existing materials in a variety of heating/cooling systems and hot and cold drinking water supply networks. Pipes produced from the resin also offer excellent stress crack resistance, thermal conductivity, and good flexibility. Because of its outstanding processability and high temperature resistance, DOWLEX 2388 PE Resin is particularly useful in multi-layer metal and plastic composite pipes, the fastest growing market segment.

DOWLEX 2388 PE Resin offers two installation benefits: improved connectivity and greater flexibility than traditional materials. It can be welded, which enables connection through inexpensive, injection-molded connectors.

Pipes manufactured using this resin are designed to have a lifetime of more than 50 years, according to internationally accepted rules. They are compliant with most drinking water regulations worldwide.

Processability

The excellent processability of DOWLEX 2388 PE Resin is a key benefit of the product, especially for the fastest growing market segment, composite pipes. The resin can be produced in a single-step extrusion process at high line speeds, requiring no additional equipment or post-production process. This extrusion process provides significant cost benefits:

  • Line speed of up to 60 m/min possible without processing aid
  • No loss of start up material, as regrind can be used
  • No extra curing step necessary
  • Meets taste and odor performance requirements
  • No laboratory analysis of degree of cross-linking

Applications

DOWLEX 2388 PE Resin is designed for hot and cold water pipe applications. It is well suited for floor heating, radiator connections, snow-melt systems, heat exchangers, solar panels, heat recovery systems, hot or cold drinking water networks, plumbing, industrial pipe, and monolayer and multilayer aluminum pipes. It can be used in industrial applications where conventional PE usually fails, thanks to its high strength at extreme temperatures.
