Road Heating and Cooling

Our pipe resins are also at the heart of a new Road Energy System®, a revolutionary new technology that stores energy from asphalt in order to keep roads operational year-round. The system is based on a network of all-plastic multilayer pipes in the asphalt made from DOWLEX™ PE Resins.

The application is designed to cool down roads in the summer time in order to prevent asphalt damage, and de-ice the roads in winter, preventing accidents and the deterioration of roads. Heavy traffic can deform road surfaces when asphalt becomes warm in hot, summer weather. Cool ground water pumped through the pipe network acts a cooling agent. The water becomes hot in the process, and the heated water is then stored underground for use in winter.

Pipes made with DOWLEX 2344 PE Resin from Dow are particularly suitable for this application because of their excellent flexibility and the resulting ease and high speed of installation. DOWLEX 2344 PE Resin provides long-term hydrostatic strength at high temperatures without the need for cross-linking, making it the material of choice for heating applications such as this. Produced through Dow’s proprietary Solution process, DOWLEX 2344 PE Resin is an ethylene-octene copolymer, featuring a unique molecular structure with a controlled side chain distribution.
