Boiler Make-Up Water
Boiler feedwater is generally the blend of returned steam condensate and fresh make-up water that is added to replace the volume escaping as steam or discharged as blowdown. Depending on technology preference, region, water source, and boiler type, a variety of technologies may be required to treat makeup water before it enters the steam loop. Dow has the widest range of products available to pretreat (UF), demineralize (RO and IX), and polish (IX) makeup water to protect your equipment from scaling and corrosion.
Condensate Polishing
Condensate polishers protect critical boiler components from potential condenser leaks, thereby improving plant reliability. Our ion exchange resins have been the backbone of condensate polishing systems throughout the world for decades. Depending on the chemistry used in the boiler feed water, the right resin combination will help provide the optimum performance in terms of treated condensate purity and cycle run length.

FGD Blowdown & Ash Pond Treatment
Wet scrubbers used to remove SO2 and other pollutants from flue gas are periodically purged to discharge accumulated solids. This Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) wastewater stream is high in TDS and hardness, and contains residual quantities of micropollutants (such as boron, nitrates/nitrites, arsenic, mercury and selenium) that, along with associated ash ponds at coal fired power plants, are subject to increasingly stringent regulatory requirements. Treatments for contaminant removal or even zero liquid discharge using evaporative technologies may be required to achieve compliance, but are challenged by both high cost and operational difficulties. Dow offers a comprehensive portfolio of treatment solutions to manage the difficulties of FGD and ash pond wastewaters.

Stator Cooling
The stator cooling circuit requires careful control of its chemistry (pH, dissolved oxygen, dissolved copper) in order to provide efficient cooling, little corrosion, and no deposition of corrosion products in the cooling elements. Ion exchange resins are used to control the chemistry of the loop by increasing or decreasing pH, lowering conductivity, and removing dissolved copper.

Cooling Water Blowdown
Cooling tower blowdown is often too impaired to be reused without treatment and is typically sent directly to the facility’s wastewater treatment plant. This imposes a hydraulic load on the wastewater treatment system. More importantly, a tremendous amount of relatively clean water is wasted, adding significant cost and discharge compliance complexity. Dow can work with you to deliver the optimal solution for your needs, using robust, reliable, fouling-resistant filtration and purification technologies to recover and return up to 90% of blowdown water for makeup water use.
