Partner Profile: Korean Chemical Society Provides Recognition for Top Researchers

Creators of top research projects are honored at the Dow Chemical Symposium.

A doctoral student in the Chemistry Department at Pusan National University won the top prize for research papers recognized at this year’s Dow Chemical Symposium, an annual award program organized by the Company and the Korean Chemical Society.

The program attracted 184 papers from master’s and doctoral degree candidates at Korean universities as well as post-doctoral researchers. Nine winning papers were selected by a panel of five judges that included representatives of Dow Korea and electronic materials faculty.

The Korean Chemical Society, now in its 69th year, promotes research and education, with the aim of contributing to the prosperity of all humankind in the 21st Century. Its philosophy is expressed in the catchphrase "Green Chemistry, Clean World." The Society has more than 7,000 members.

"Dow Chemical Symposium was designed as a platform to share the winning papers on electronic materials applied for the competition and to support academic advancement and active exchanges. We will continue to support research activities by science and engineering students in electronic materials,” said Dow Korea Country Manager Jae-Hoon Lee.

First place went to Ji-Hoon Kim for his paper “Effect of π-conjugated bridges of TPD-based medium bandgap conjugated copolymers for efficient tandem organic photovoltaic cells.” The judging panel praised the research, writing: “A high-efficiency bottom cell is expected to be a key technology that will improve the efficiency of a tandem organic solar cell. The research shows a reduction in efficiency in the course of heat processing can be overcome to some degree.”

Kim earned a cash prize of 3 million won (about $2,500 U.S.). Three second place winners received 2 million won apiece and five third-place winners each received 1 million won. A research grant of 1 million won also was awarded to the labs of each winner, and all of the winners will receive a bonus if they join Dow Korea.
