Habitat Homeowner Stories
Since 1983, Dow and Habitat have helped more than 45,000 families around the world realize the dream of home ownership. The true impact of this partnership is best told from the eyes of those whose lives were changed because of the collaboration – the homeowners.
Tao Baoyuan - Volunteers from Habitat China, including nine local Dow employees, renovated Tao’s kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. Now the apartment is safe and comfortable. With a newfound pride of homeownership, Tao has accessed government assistance to pay for a cleaning service that will keep his apartment neat and tidy. Tao now regularly invites friends and family to enjoy meals they prepare together in his newly upgraded kitchen.
Sun Qiaodi - With funding from Dow and a local government subsidy, volunteers from Habitat China rebuilt Sun’s house. The remodeled house now has two stories that feature many essential structural improvements and amenity upgrades such as a new bathroom, modern electrical switches with safe wiring, and a renovated kitchen with nonslip flooring. The new house means Sun has a comfortable and affordable place to enjoy as she grows old.
Xiong Fen - By installing safe wiring, nonslip flooring, updated kitchen cabinets, a modern stove, a new toilet and shower, Habitat and Dow volunteers created a safer home and improved quality of life for the octogenarian. Xiong especially appreciates the grab bars installed as part of bathroom renovation. She no longer worries about falling, knowing the sturdy bars are there for her safety. The much-needed improvements have strengthened Xiong’s natural optimism.
T.B. Hlongwane - In 2011, Habitat South Africa and local Dow volunteers spent a week of hard work building seven new homes in partnership with qualified South African families. By mixing cement, erecting walls and trusses, laying roof tiles and painting, volunteers were able to build new homes and improve the lives and opportunities of the families.
Stephen Macharia - The 2012 Habitat Kenya and Dow build provided Stephen and his family with more than a home. It also gave them a sense of security. He is now more confident that he can protect his wife and two small children. And with the modest vegetable garden in his yard, he can supplement his income to better support his family. Stephen is ecstatic that his family was among the beneficiaries of Habitat Kenya’s new home build.
Jason Lefevre - The success of Habitat for Humanity ReStore resale outlets across the U.S. has created a valuable opportunity that will help more people achieve homeownership. To maximize this opportunity, Jason Lefevre volunteers his expertise and time to help Habitat for Humanity to improve and streamline logistics for its more than 800 Habitat ReStores.
In 2011, 50 Dow Seadrift Operations employees and retirees volunteered alongside Golden Crescent Habitat for Humanity in Victoria, Texas for 19 days to build the Garza family a new home. From the first breaking of ground through the home’s dedication, this construction exemplified Dow and Habitat’s spirit of collaboration-driven volunteerism.
The Martinez Family - This is the story of the Martinez family from Plaquemine, Louisiana. For twelve years after arriving in the United States from Mexico, Maria and Ramiro Martinez lived with their two children in a dilapidated house on the sugar cane farm where Ramiro was employed. They dreamed of owning a home of their own one day and thanks to Dow and Habitat for Humanity that dream became a reality.
The Matute-Juarez Family - In September of 2013, Dow, the University of Michigan, and Habitat for Humanity Huron Valley teamed up to make the dream of homeownership a reality for the Matute-Juarez family. With two young children and another on the way, Laura and Alejandro Matute-Juarez were ready to move the family from their two-bedroom apartment to their new home in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Mary Jacobs - This is the story of a Midland woman, whose dream was to provide a safe home for her daughter and mother. In 2013, Dow and Habitat for Humanity celebrated more than 30 years for partnership providing decent, affordable housing to families around the world.
