Dow Polyurethanes Launches Next-Generation Pre-blended Polyol System in Thailand

New solution enables more sustainable rigid foam for cold chain and construction industries

Midland, Mich. - September 28, 2016

Dow Polyurethanes, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), today announced the availability of its next-generation pre-blended polyol system for the Thai market and other Southeast Asian countries. Combining Dow's advanced polyether polyol offerings and Honeywell's industry-leading blowing agent HFC (hydrofluorocarbons) 245fa, the new solution provides a sustainable pathway for customers to comply with increasingly stringent government regulations on environmental protection.

The new system will help rigid foam manufacturers of cold storage warehouses, insulated roofing panels and iceboxes smoothly replace the HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) 141b blowing agent which is required to be phased out with its Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0.1 contributing to global warming according to the 2007 Montreal Protocol. Governments of Southeast Asian countries are expected to speed up new regulations to ban the use of HCFC 141b.

The new polyol system features zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) while providing better foam property. As a pre-blended system, it reduces the necessary investment for customers, as no premix stations are required on customer premises, nor special safety facilities or instruments due to the non-flammability of HFC 245fa. It also offers ease of handling because of the non-corrosion and low toxicity of HFC 245fa, as well as its similar storage requirements and material handling as the current HCFC 141b system. In addition, local production of the new system at Dow Thailand’s facilities at Map Tha Phut, Rayong, will provide short lead time and flexibility.

"Dow Polyurethanes is fully committed to working closely with our partners and customers to drive the sustainability of the industry," said Vichan Tangkengsirisin, associate marketing director, Dow Polyurethanes Asia Pacific. "With our innovative technology breakthroughs, we stand firmly behind government initiatives that support the move towards sustainability. This new polyol system is just one of many from Dow that is propelling the evolution of the industry."

With the phase-out of HCFC 141b, Dow has various polyurethanes solutions with different types of blowing agents, such as cyclopentane and water-based technologies, to address customer needs. The HFC 245fa pre-blended system is one of the sustainable solutions that Dow recently developed to support customers in anticipation of the HCFC 141b phase-out.

Dow applies its science expertise to create sustainable solutions for some of the world's greatest challenges. In April 2015, Dow launched its ambitious 2025 Sustainability Goals, the Company's third set of ten-year goals since 1995. Over the next decade, Dow will continue to minimize its own environmental footprint, deliver ever-increasing value to customers and society through its products and solutions, and develop a blueprint for collaboration on a more sustainable planet and society.
