ETHOCEL™ ethyl cellulose polymers are film-forming, release rate-modifying and water-insoluble polymers that have been used in pharmaceutical applications for over half of a century.
ETHOCEL™ is Dow’s longest established brand and one of the few water-insoluble cellulosic excipients available to the pharmaceutical market. The products are derived from predominantly renewable resources, and sourced primarily from suppliers with certified sustainable forestry practices.
ETHOCEL™ products are soluble in common solvents and compatible with many plasticizers. Its distinctive properties make it ideal for: extended release multi-particulate coatings, micro-encapsulation of actives, controlled release hydrophobic matrix systems, solvent and extrusion granulation, tablet binding for direct compression and taste-masking of bitter APIs.
A broad range of ETHOCEL™ polymers are available varying in viscosity, substitution and powder properties. The polymers form strong, flexible films that are commonly used in coatings. Fine Particle grades are also available for use in inert matrix tablets as well as High Productivity grades for use in dry-powder application of barrier membranes to multiparticulate beads.
ETHOCEL™ High Productivity is a new polymer designed for high speed dry powder layering process - coat up to 70% faster than current multiparticulate coating technologies, in a completely solventless system for environmentally friendly multi-particulate production.
Applications for ETHOCEL™ Polymers
ETHOCEL™ offers a versatile diffusion barrier for multiparticulate systems while forming strong films with good adhesion. ETHOCEL™ films offer versatility in drug release rates and can be applied to a wide variety of substrates in most commonly used pharmaceutical processes. Fine Particle (FP) grades produce hard tablets with low friability that can be used to modify the release profile of an inert matrix without swelling or dissolving. ETHOCEL™ High Productivity (HP) grades can be used to modify the release rate of multiparticulate beads without the use of solvents through a dry powder coating technique.
The water-insoluble nature of ETHOCEL™ prevents immediate dissolution upon ingestion. ETHOCEL™ comes in a wide range of viscosity grades, and can be customized for those applications where greater taste-masking functionality is required.
Hot Melt Extrusion
ETHOCEL™ is a versatile and powerful tool in hot melt extrusion of pharmaceutical formulations thanks to its excellent thermoplasticity (softening between 135°C and 160°C) which helps formulators to obtain specific release profiles for a variety of final dosage forms.
ETHOCEL™ Polymers can be used for solvent granulation of water-sensitive materials to enable the production of strong, low-friability tablets with wide range of dissolution rates.
ETHOCEL™ HP is a new high productivity ethylcellulose polymer for multi-particulate and taste masking applications that help pharmaceutical companies dry coat barrier membranes in shorter coating times, at higher efficiencies and without the need for solvents. In trials conducted by Dow, the use of ETHOCEL™ HP reduced overall coating times by 70% when compared to both aqueous and solvent spray systems. Such faster coating speeds could enable pharmaceutical companies to increase their productivity yields and decrease formulation development time.
ETHOCEL™ HP trials have also shown consistent 98-99% coating efficiency, providing pharmaceutical companies with opportunities for raw material cost savings and an easier clean-up step. All of these advantages, while still producing robust formulations, with excellent film strength and stable drug release.
