Abuse Deterrence
Whether intentional or unintentional, the abuse of particular drugs can be potentially life threatening. The FDA suggests that by 2020, all narcotics will require some type of abuse deterrence technology to be commercialized and approved for sales in the US.
To address the health and regulatory needs, Dow offers a broad range of chemistry for abuse deterrence applications. POLYOX™, a high molecular poly(ethylene oxide), is the leading, recognized technology in this space and provides tamper resistant properties. In addition, the ion exchange resins AMBERLITE™ and DUOLITE™ can bind the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to prevent immediate release.
Solutions for Abuse Deterrence
POLYOX™ Polymers
The thermoplasticity and gelling behaviors of POLYOX™ make it a successful candidate in discouraging abuse. POLYOX™ makes tablet extra tough to crush, or helps create a formulation that can turn a tablet’s powdery contents into a gel-like substance when water is added, which prohibits abusers from injecting it.
AMBERLITE™ Ion Exchange Resins
A suitable tool for abuse deterrence, AMBERLITE™ resins can bind the API and prevent immediate release even when the formulation is crushed, maintaining the intended rate of absorption.
DUOLITE™ Ion Exchange Resins
A suitable tool for abuse deterrence, DUOLITE™ resins can bind the API and prevent immediate release even when the formulation is crushed, maintaining the intended rate of absorption.
