Achieve efficient foam control with low levels of defects
With new low-VOC binders, the reduction of co-solvent in formulations, and demands for increased speed in paint production and application, foam control is an ongoing challenge for today's waterborne paint and ink formulators.
Defoaming may be easy to achieve in some cases, but incompatibility between the defoamer and the formulation often leads to film defects.
Dow has applied its deep knowledge of silicone chemistry and extensive antifoam know-how to produce a range of waterborne defoamers that couple high levels of foam control efficiency with low levels of film defects.
Solutions for your waterborne foam-control challenges
For versatility – DOWSIL™ 69 Additive (an emulsion) and DOWSIL™ 8590 Additive (a self-dispersible compound) are the mainstays of our new range of waterborne antifoams and defoamers. These versatile silicone additives are designed for use in inks, overprint varnishes and all types of premium industrial and architectural paints with low to medium pigment volume concentrations.
For more challenging foam problems – DOWSIL™ 8603 Additive may be recommended.
For systems with co-solvent – DOWSIL™ 8610 Additive offers a high level of compatibility. DOWSIL™ 8610 Additive shows excellent defoaming performance in waterborne coatings and ink systems and has a low tendency to cause surface defects. The recommended addition level of DOWSIL™ 8610 Additive is 0.05 to 1% as supplied, based on total formulation. It can be added directly or pre-diluted with alcohols or polyglycols.
Figure 1: Performance of DOWSIL™ 8610 Additive in two kinds of waterborne flexo gravure inks (Blue and Red). DOWSIL™ 8610 Additive also works as an excellent defoamer at 0.2 weight percent for inks.
Figure2: Surface appearance of the same waterborne flexographic inks after drawdown on polyethylene laminated card board at 18.3 microns wet film thickness. In this case DOWSIL™ 8610 Additive shows better finish than competitive defoamer 3 without surface defects.
For low-temperature applications – DOWSIL™ 8590 Additive and DOWSIL™ 8610 Additive provide effective foam control at low temperatures.
For excellent defoaming and compatibility – DOWSIL™ 8628 Additive possesses a novel technology that, in select binder systems, enables formulators to achieve excellent defoaming performance coupled with excellent compatibility.
For APEO-free formulating – All of the products in this range are formulated without APEO.
For indirect food contact – DOWSIL™ 8590 Additive and DOWSIL™ 8603 Additive are good choices. To obtain food contact regulatory status information, including FDA, EU, Swiss Ordinance and German BfR clearance, visit our EH&S Information Portal or contact our EH&S team.
