Primary and secondary production methods can leave up to 70-80% of the original oil in the reservoir in place. Techniques to improve oil recovery (IOR) or enhance oil recovery (EOR) have been developed over the years to increase production and reservoir life.
With an extensive background and experience in polymer chemistry and surfactants for use in oil production, Dow is at the forefront of the Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR) evolution. We offer a broad portfolio of solvents, surfactants, chelants, biocides and water treatment products, along with the expertise to fine-tune these solutions to individual field conditions to help producers get the most out of their assets.
Surfactants for CEOR Applications
CEOR uses a specifically designed formulations which create a microemulsion with crude oil and brine for reservoir conditions. Dow offers a broad range of anionic & nonionic surfactants that can increase oil recovery by obtaining ultra low interfacial tension (ULIFT) between the oil and brine allowing microemulsions to form.
ELEVATE™ Wettability Alteration Additives
Many reservoirs, such as mixed wet sandstone and oil wet carbonates, trap a significant amount of oil at the rock surface. This oil is bound tightly and is difficult to remove by traditional water flooding methods. Creating more water wet conditions on the rock releases significant amounts of oil. The wettability can be changed through both chemical (surfactants) and geochemical (water ionic strength) methods. ELEVATE™ Wettability Alteration Additives increase oil recovery by lowering the surface tension between oil and the reservoir rock. The technology is easy to implement in the field through direct injection into the water flooding systems resulting in improved flow pathways.
ELEVATE™ Co-Solvents for exceptional solubility and microemulsion viscosity
Microemulsions can often have stability or viscosity issues, solvents are often used to improve microemulsion behavior. Dow has a line of alcohol and glycol ether based co-solvents for formulating a variety of complex surfactant/co-surfactant mixtures that are suitable for the specific needs of your system.
Chelants for water quality management in EOR
Water used for injection can often react negatively with surfactants and polymers used in CEOR. Dow’s chelants are used to manage water quality, particularly divalent ions, to allow easier formulation of surfactant brine solutions.
CEOR water bnased formulations can be contaiminated with microbial growth that can attack additives and cause problems downhole. Dow’s AQUCAR™ Mirobiocides provide effective solutions for control of microorganisms for produced water reinjection, as well as for preservation of water-based solutions that are susceptible to microbial attack. RO & Nanofiltration Membranes
Water is the standard solvent used for flooding and CEOR. Proper treatment of water can make or break EOR implementation. Dow’s portfolio of nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes is able to provide tailored water for most water-based EOR process such as simple sulphate removing water flooding, chemical EOR or low-salinity water flooding.
