ETAG Certification Confirms Long-Lasting Performance of New Roofing Emulsion Polymer

 Horgen, Switzerland - A liquid applied roof waterproofing membrane based on a formulation developed by Dow Construction Chemicals (DCC) - a business unit of DowDuPont Materials Science Division (NYSE: DWDP) – has achieved ETAG (European Technical Approval Guideline) certification, making it easier for roof membrane manufacturers to obtain CE marking for their products when using the same formulation.

The waterproofing membrane - using water-borne PRIMAL™ EC-5210 PU Acrylic Polyurethane technology - has been successfully tested according to ETAG 005, which specifically covers Liquid Applied Roof Waterproofing Kits. ETAGs are given to finished building materials, and enable products to use the CE mark, which are mandatory in many European countries, and widely recognised within the construction industry as a reliable quality indicator.

With the development of novel PRIMAL™ EC-5210 PU Acrylic Polyurethane Emulsion Polymer, Dow Construction Chemicals has enabled the formulation of a liquid-applied, high quality roof waterproofing membrane that performs against key durability criteria, is cost-effective, and - as it is water-borne - helps to manufacture a roof membrane with an improved environmental, health and sustainability profile.

In order to achieve ETAG 005 the membrane formulated with PRIMAL™ EC-5210 PU polymer had to demonstrate that it would last for an expected 10 year lifespan, and perform against severe climate tests under different conditions, including service temperatures of up to 90°C.

“PRIMAL™ EC-5210 PU Acrylic Polyurethane Emulsion Polymer could be the key component in our customers’ formulations, so using our proprietary guide formulation should help manufacturers achieve CE marking for their roofing membranes much more efficiently,” explained Jouko Vyorykka, R&D Manager for Dow Construction Chemicals. “The next step is to aim for 25 year lifespan certification, which requires five years of real life exposure, and we are already well underway with that thanks to test sites already installed.”
