Protective Coatings

Delivering protection and performance with robust coatings that last

We offer a variety of polyurethane raw materials including specialty polyether polyols to help you formulate high-performance coatings that protect industrial equipment, consumer goods and everything in between. For light to medium duty maintenance and protective coatings, general industrial metal finishing, and architectural applications, we offer waterborne acrylic resins that enable formulations with lower volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Polyether polyols

Robust and versatile, our polyols can be used in 1K and 2K coating systems and offer advanced hydrophobic properties, improved processing, ease of formulation and excellent mechanical properties in a wide range of applications. And with our backward integration into the basic feedstocks for producing polyurethane chemicals, we are able to provide the highest levels of product purity as well as tailor reactivities and mechanical performance to your most demanding requirements.

Key benefits of Dow polyether polyols for protective coatings include:

  • Fast cure
  • Excellent flexibility
  • Enhanced elongation
  • Increased tensile strength and hardness
  • High resilience
  • Outstanding moisture and chemical resistance in extreme environments
  • Reduced gel time
  • Superior bond strength

Waterborne acrylic resins

Our waterborne acrylic binders facilitate the formulation of industrial coatings to less than or equal to 50 g/L VOC for use in industrial maintenance finishes for steel and concrete, commercial architectural finishes for metal and concrete, institutional coatings, DIY metal coatings, general industrial metal finishes, and transportation coatings (e.g. railcars and shipping containers). Compared to current direct-to-metal (DTM) finish coats formulated at various VOC levels from < 50 to 200 g/L, our acrylic resins offer an improved balance of hardness, corrosion and durability properties, as well as good architectural gloss and trim paint properties.

Key benefits include:

  • Excellent gloss retention
  • Very good block resistance
  • Improved resistance to dirt pickup, humidity and corrosion
  • Formulation with lower VOC levels
