Dow INFUSE™ OBC-Based Performance Midsole Solution Wins 2016 Ringier Technology Innovation Award

The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) has won the 2016 Ringier Technology Innovation Award in the category of Rubber/Elastomers Materials and Additives for its INFUSE™ Olefin Block Copolymers (OBCs) solution used in the athletic shoe midsole. It is the only winning technology for this category.

During the past several years, athletic shoe consumers around the world have been demanding better cushioning technology in performance athletic shoes. Footwear makers are, therefore, in need of higher performance midsole solutions to meet the new consumer trend in performance.

Midsoles are a critical component in the design of a shoe when it comes to determining the life of the shoe and the quality of the runner’s ride. In particular, midsoles protect the runner from injury, absorbing shock from jumping and running during a workout and lessening the impact and stress on the body. They also serve as the center of stability for an athlete, preventing the foot from rolling inward or outward, which can lead to pain and injury.

In a market where midsole foams have traditionally provided a minimum level of benefits in comfort, INFUSE OBCs solution for footwear foams perfectly address the challenges that the incumbent midsole materials have not been able to address.

Created using Dow’s INSITE™ Technology, the revolutionary INFUSE™ OBCs can improve resilience, softness and durability, while also reducing the overall weight of the shoe. These attributes are critical performance features that INFUSE™ delivers, enabling footwear brand owners to meet the increasing demands of runners around the world.

In 2012, INFUSE™ OBCs were awarded the ICIS Product Innovation Award due to the technology’s unique blend of flexible polymer segments with hard blocks of high-melting-point polymer, an innovation never before achieved with polyolefin elastomer chemistry.

The 2016 Ringier Awards featured a total of 11 categories with various nominations across Asia Pacific. In the category of “Rubber/Elastomers Materials and Additives”, entries were judged against a stringent set of standards by a panel of experienced judges as well as through online votes casted by the public.
