Novel Products for Oil Sands Needs
Oil sands mining mixes the complexities of mining and ore processing with the difficulty of heavy oil extraction where traditional mining and oil and gas solutions do not apply. Dow has developed novel solutions for mature oil sands mining for over 8 years. Whether mature fines tailings (MFT) treatment or novel additives for the improvement of napthethic froth treated bitumen quality, our goal is to solve the industries toughest challenges.
Dow has been developing novel solutions for mature fines tailings (MFT) treatment in Oil Sands for over 5 years. Chemical ammendments or flocculants are added to MFT to rapidly dewater the tailings providing a flowable solids stream and a clear release water stream. Efforts have been focused at Deep Deposit Technology but solutions have also been developed for other existing consoldation and deposition technologies
Froth Flotation Capabilities
The traditional method for extraction of bitumen from mined oil sands uses the napthenic froth process which requires onsite upgrading due to bitumen quality. High water in this stream can cause downstream equipment corrosion. Dow is developing novel additives for the reduction of basic sediment and water (BS&W) and chlorides in napthenic froth treated bitumen with a goal to produce bitumen that is pipeline quality.

Dow offers an array of solutions for in-situ oil sands applications including Steam Flooding, Cyclic Steam Stimulation (CSS) and Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD).
