Yarn Type

The yarn type, the choice of resin used, the shape and geometry of the yarn will play a significant role with regards to skin and surface friction.

The softness of the material is a decisive characteristic in this context. For that reason, polyethylene solutions are particularly suitable and increasingly used in this application, where other resins, such as polypropylene and polyamide, are much too harsh and hence too abrasive for the skin.

A lower density fiber can be achieved with the monofilament yarn, enabling to increase the softness without taking away too much of the resiliency and overall modulus of the yarn.

Pile Height

Pile hight has a key role in achieving low friction parameters. Piles should have sufficiently long blades of grass to cover the infill material to diminish the risk of skin/surface friction and ultimately skin abrasion.

Your Dow product choice for yarn type will contribute to desired pile height.
Infill Type

Infill type will have a direct impact on the degree of skin and surface friction. A higher degree of elastomers is needed to achieve a degree of softness which reduces skin and surface friction.

A good balance between elastomer and sand infill is key as standard silica sand on its own is very abrasive to skin and the yarn.
Coated sand avoids any jagged and rough particles, and low compaction behavior helps maintain a smooth surface.

Extreme temperatures can also effect and change the properties of the infill, making it too sticky at high temperatures and harder at lower temperatures, thus increasing skin and surface friction levels.
