Continuously active since 1993, Dow Venture Capital invests in the development of start-up technology companies where it can be a differentiated investor, adding to the success of Dow's portfolio companies and enhancing the financial return to Dow investors.
Here are some examples from our investment portfolio.
Alta Devices, was founded in 2007 and is focused on making solar power cost competitive with fossil fuels and accessible anywhere the sun shines. Using a variety of proprietary manufacturing techniques and a unique approach to device design, Alta has invented the world's thinnest and highest efficiency solar cells. Alta's flexible cells hold the world records for cell and module efficiency. Dow’s venture capital investment in Alta demonstrates our commitment to enabling alternative energy technology solutions delivering long-term value to the market.
Blade Dynamics has developed wind turbine blade technologies designed to increase efficiency and performance of wind turbines, while also reducing costs. This technology has the potential to significantly improve the performance of wind power generation and transform the industry. Dow Venture Capital's investment in Blade Dynamics aligns with Dow's commitment to supporting and accelerating the development of innovative technologies and alternative energy solutions.
Clean Filtration Technologies
Clean Filtration Technologies, Inc. (CFT) engineers efficient, next-generation water treatment technology. CFT produces the CFT Turboclone™ hydroclone system, a patented water filtration device designed to efficiently reduce total suspended solids from difficult-to-filter water. This technology offers the potential to further support sustainable operations across the industry. This investment is strategically aligned to enable and accelerate business growth for Dow Water & Process Solutions.
Cymbet Corporation is the leader in solid-state energy storage technology. The company is the first to market eco-friendly rechargeable storage devices that provide electronic systems designers with new embedded energy capabilities. The company's EnerChip™ smart solid state battery with integrated power management enable new concepts in energy storage application for ICs and new products for medical, sensor, RFID, industrial control, communications and portable electronic devices. This strategic alignment strengthens Dow’s participation in rapidly growing solid state lithium ion battery markets.
Imprint Energy is working to address the energy needs of today’s and tomorrow’s electronic devices through the commercialization of Zinc Poly™ - a low-cost, flexible, safe, earth-abundant, rechargeable battery technology with lithium-like performance.
Lightscape Materials, Inc.
Lightscape Materials, Inc. is developing and supplying a variety of high-quality novel phosphor solutions engineered specifically for the LED lighting industry. LED lighting is an emerging technology that is expected to change the landscape of lighting in the 21st century. Dow’s investment in this technology aligns to the strategic growth interests of the Dow Electronic Materials business which has been an important player in the solid-state lighting market for over 35 years.
NuvoSun is a second-generation innovator of thin-film photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules based on flexible Copper Indium/Gallium di-Selenide (CIGS) technology and an ultra-low cost proprietary manufacturing process and equipment. Dow's investment in NuvoSun is one of several examples of Dow investing in alternative energy technologies both internally and externally to ensure that innovative products deliver superior value for our customers now and into the future. NuvoSun is one of many companies developing technology to increase the performance and lower the cost of PV devices, and their effort to improve large-scale, thin-film CIGS production processes provides yet another potential option to enable future generation Dow products.
Primet Precision Materials
