NLGI Honors Dow Technical Specialist with Prestige Author Award
Midland, MI - July 01, 2014
Govind Khemchandani, Ph. D., senior technical specialist for Dow Lubricants and Fuel Additives, a business of Dow (NYSE: DOW) has been honored by the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) with its prestigious Author Award.
Dr. Khemchandani received the award at the NLGI 81st Annual Meeting for his 2013 research paper titled “Characteristics of UCON™ OSP-based Lithium Complex Grease.” The paper was selected because of its focus on formulation, development and manufacture of finished greases.
“As an active member of NLGI, I am thrilled and honored to be receiving the Author Award,” said Dr. Khemchandani. “Advancements in the lubricants industry are vital to delivering solutions to broad portfolio applications like gear lubricants, hydraulic, metalworking and compressor fluids, so organizations like the NLGI are key to promoting collaboration and supporting the industry.”
The winning paper discussed the manufacturing and development of oil-soluble polyalkylene (OSP) based lithium complex grease for automotive applications that meet the severe performance levels as defined in ASTM D 4950 for GC-LB service category. These bearings allow the wheels to rotate with minimal friction and support the vehicle’s weight for a smoother ride.
The introduction of new UCON™ OSPs to the grease market expands the restricted application of conventional PAG-based specialty greases to a wide variety of requirements which include general purpose greases and automotive greases. The UCON™ OSP-based grease has received acceptance in automobile racing and exceeds the general steel mill grease specifications.
For the past three years, Dr. Khemchandani has been presenting Dow’s UCON™ OSP based grease technology at NLGI. Dr. Khemchandani holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai, India, and has more than 20 years of experience in the industrial and automotive lubricants and greases industries.
The NLGI honors those who have made exceptional contributions to NLGI or the industry with the Author Award at the annual meeting. Dr. Khemchandani presented the winning paper at the annual meeting last year and was selected under the “NLGI Author Award-Development” category. Each year the annual meeting is attended by international grease experts that present on new grease related technologies.
The NLGI is an international trade association that has been serving the lubricants grease industry since 1933 and promotes the research and development of lubrication technology.
