LaBranche Wetland Watchers Celebration St. Charles, LA - April 21, 2006 More than 700 students, parents and volunteers participated in the annual Harry Hurst Middle School LaBranche Wetland Watchers Celebration Thursday, April 12, 2006, held on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, where the lake meets the Bonnet Carre Spillway in St. Charles Parish. Dow was one of the primary sponsors of the event providing informational booths, employee volunteers, refreshments and also sponsored Radio Disney’s live broadcast from the event. “Dow really set the precedent at the beginning of the year,” said Barry Guillot, LaBranche Wetland Watchers Project Coordinator. “At the beginning of the year, many of our partners were displaced due to the hurricanes and not able to attend trips. However, Dow provided enthusiastic volunteers who assisted wherever they were needed.” Fifth grade students, teachers and parent chaperones from Luling, St. Rose, Des Allemands and Ethel Schoeffner Elementary schools received their initial experience and introduction to the Wetland Watchers program. Seventh and eighth grade students from Harry Hurst Middle School celebrated and shared their accomplishments from the school year with the elementary students that will be entering the middle school program. Stanley Dufrene, Dow Community Relations Manager, explained, “What better way for young students to appreciate science and the environment than through hands-on learning in the swamps and bayous of Louisiana. With Dow’s help, students have been able to realize how precious and important our wetlands are to the local community.” Dow donated $20,000, in spring 2005, to the LaBranche Wetland Watchers for students to develop nature trails throughout 28 areas of land donated to St. Charles Parish by the Pontchartrain Levee Board. Guillot said, “This generous donation is a direct example of how the businesses in this area enhance the education of our students and provide a better quality of life for area families.” Dow has been a proud sponsor since the nationally awarded student program began in 1999. Other celebration participants included Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Department, Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, University of New Orleans, LSU Sea Grant, U.S. Corp of Engineers, Lt. Governor’s Learn and Serve Commission, America’s Wetlands, Gulf Restoration Network, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Monsanto, Valero and Motiva.
