| Dow employees present LaBranche Wetland Watcher program director Barry Guillot with a check for $20,000 to benefit young students learning about science and the environment. |
What better way for young students to understand science and the environment than through hands on learning in the swamps and bayous of Louisiana. St. Charles Operations recently donated $20,000 to the LaBranche Wetland Watchers involving students developing nature trails throughout 28 acres of land that was recently donated to St. Charles Parish by the Pontchartrain Levee Board. The students will work jointly with local environmentalist, Milton Cambre, St. Charles Parish Coastal Zone Administrator Earl Matherne, and the Lieutenant Governor's Office Americorps organization to complete the project.
The LaBranche Wetland Watchers is a nationally awarded student program at Harry Hurst Middle School that began in 1999 and is led by teacher Barry Guillot. The Wetland Watchers, consisting of Hurst 7th graders and students throughout St. Charles Parish, complete several activities throughout the year that are focused on education, service and awareness. These activities include collecting trash, planting trees, performing water quality tests and learning to serve as guides to hundreds of younger students on wetland trips.
Guillot stated, "Through this donation, Dow is providing seed money for a project that will culminate in a series of nature trails that all students will be able to use as an outdoor classroom. Hurst students will be researching and developing all of the background information about the rich history of the area to create brochures for self-guided tours along the trails. This generous donation is a direct example of how the businesses in this area enhance the education of our students and develop areas for families to spend quality time together."
Dow has been a proud sponsor of this project since its inception in 1999, and employees continue to volunteer during Wetland Watcher service trips and the annual Wetlands Celebration that have involved over 6,000 St. Charles Parish students from different schools. All of the trips take place where the Bonne Carre Spillway meets Lake Pontchartrain, a lakefront area that has been designated as the "LaBranche Wetlands Scenic Area".
