| PTEC 101 students from Hahnville High School recently toured the Dow site in St. Charles Parish to get hands-on experience in learning about the chemical industry. |
To help better understand the coursework, Process Technology (PTEC) 101 students from Hahnville High School recently visited Dow at St. Charles Operations for a first-hand look at chemical manufacturing in action. The PTEC 101 class is for 11th and 12th grade students interested in the process technology field.
As part of the PTEC class field trip, the high school students had the opportunity to see the St. Charles Operations Hydrocarbons Plant to view first hand the equipment they have been studying this past quarter in school: turbines, furnaces, boilers, heat exchangers and electric motors. They also visited the Butanol Plant control room to gain insight into the control board role of a plant operator.
The PTEC 101 offered at Hahnville High School enables students to earn three hours of credit towards a 2-year associate degree program in process technology, while continuing to work towards their high school diploma. Dow is sponsoring the college-level PTEC class in partnership with other area chemical and refining companies to help students from St. Charles Parish gain a head-start towards the PTEC degree, which provides the skills needed to work in local chemical plants. Volunteer instructors that work at Dow (Gaynell Alexander, Ron Fanara, Carl Poche, Cecil Jones, Greg Diebold, Ron Oleksik and Duane Minvielle) help teach the PTEC 101 class at Hahnville High School.
St. Charles Operations is owned by Union Carbide Corporation (UCC), a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company. "Dow", as used throughout this web site, often refers generically to The Dow Chemical Company and its consolidated subsidiaries. |
