Dow breaks ground on new latex facility in St. Charles Parish

Hahnville, LA - July 20, 2004

Dow broke ground today on a new latex facility at St. Charles Operations in Hahnville, Louisiana. The project, representing a $100 million investment, will ultimately mean that paint purchased at home improvement stores will likely be made with a key ingredient manufactured in St. Charles Parish.

The facility is expected to have approximately 30 permanent employee positions. In addition, the project’s construction phase will create about 350 construction jobs at its peak; and the duration of construction will last about 19 months.

The facility is part of Dow’s UCAR Emulsion Systems (UES), which produces and markets emulsions or polymers – also known as latexes – for paints and construction materials such as sealants and caulks. Latex is what makes paint actually stick to walls.

“Today’s activities are a testimony to Dow’s recognition of choosing Louisiana and St. Charles Parish for this project,” said St. Charles Operations’ Site Leader Nawzer Parakh. “Our site’s talented, capable workforce, strong infrastructure, integration of facilities, and ready access to raw materials proved valuable in attracting this business opportunity.”

“Dow has assembled some of the best talent in the company to construct a truly world-scale latex plant here at St. Charles Operations,” says Todd Beard, project manager for the new latex facility. “This is indeed a proud moment. We look forward to a successful and safe start-up, and many years of productive operation that is beneficial to Dow, our customers, and the community.”
