Dow volunteers recently visited Luling Elementary School to present "Science is pHun" demonstrations to nearly 100 third-grade students. "Science is pHun" is a program that was designed to motivate children and develop their interests in science and technology.
During the demonstrations, employees explained through science experiments how different chemicals combine to create end products that we all use on a daily basis. Here, Dow employee Benjie Belen and his third grade assistant use dish washing liquid, hydrogen iodide and hydrogen peroxide to create "elephant toothpaste." (Also shown at far right is Dow employee Cecil Jones.)
Safety and the significance of education are the primary focus of the demonstrations, which expose students to science through a hands-on teaching method. The "Science is pHun program" was introduced to St. Charles Parish during the demonstration at Luling. Dow is working to make the program available to students throughout the parish.
St. Charles Operations is owned by Union Carbide Corporation, which is a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company.
