Guidelines for Sealants

Many UCAR™ latex products offer the formulator a unique combination of high hydrophobicity and outstanding exterior durability at a moderate price. They are designed to be used in medium-to-high performance sealants and elastomeric coatings that, before now, typically have required acrylic polymers to meet their performance standards.

Sealants based on specific UCAR latex products combine high pigment binding, efficient plasticization, water resistance, and hydrolytic stability to produce high-performing, economical products.

Elastomeric coatings based on the polymer are suited for southern climates where flexibility at very low temperatures is not required, but where excellent dirt pick-up, water, and UV resistance are extremely important.

The Tg, hydrophobicity, alkali resistance, and exterior durability of certain polymers should also make it useful in applications such as block fillers and building products adhesives. The unique composition of UCAR latex products requires a few changes in typical sealant and coating formulating practices to make full use of its features. "Colloid" 230 (Rhône-Poulenc) is the preferred dispersant because it is more compatible with the hydrophobic nature of the polymer. Any of the several compatible plasticizers listed in the following table can be used in sealant formulations.
