Strength Characteristics

I-beam

TRYMER™ foam and STYROFOAM™ Panel Core feature excellent strength characteristics for panel applications. The core foams’ optimum mechanical strength contributes to their structural resilience without adding unnecessary weight.

Like the flanges of an I-beam, panel facings carry the compressive and tensile loads. And like an I-beam web, core materials carry the shear forces caused by loading and bending, distributing these forces over a much larger area. A multifunctional panel system incorporating TRYMER or STYROFOAM products delivers superior and consistent structural properties, with high insulation values, low water absorption and excellent overall performance.

TRYMER foam strength profile:

Compressive strength – 17 psi to 140 psi (117 kPa to 970 kPa)
Tensile strength – 30 psi to 80 psi (207 kPa to 550 kPa)
Shear strength – 13 psi to 80 psi (90 kPa to 550 kPa)
Flexural strength – 22 psi to 160 psi (151 kPa to 1,100 kPa)

STYROFOAM Panel Core strength profile:

Compressive strength – 20 psi to 60 psi (140 kPa to 420 kPa)
Tensile strength – 50 psi to 85 psi (340 kPa to 590 kPa)
Shear strength – 25 psi to 50 psi (170 kPa to 345 kPa)
Flexural strength – 50 psi to 75 psi (340 kPa to 520 kPa)
