Other Composite/Panel Applications
Dow core foams are widely used in a continually growing array of applications, including:
Structural insulated panels (SIPs)
Composite panels for roof deck systems
Garage doors
Composite patterns/plugs
Model making
Surfboard blanks
Oncology boards
Structural insulated panels (SIPs)
STYROFOAM Panel Core is “at home” in structural insulated panels (SIPs). This technology was first used in residential construction as load-bearing walls, roofs and interior partitions by renowned architect Alden B. Dow, son of The Dow Chemical Company founder, Herbert H. Dow.
Today, SIPs are widely used in commercial, industrial and residential construction. The simple but innovative technology combines structural framing, insulation and exterior sheathing in a single step, saving labor and creating an exceptionally strong, energy-efficient wall system.

Composite patterns/plugs
Dimensionally stable at very high temperatures (up to 300°F), TRYMER foam can be sculpted or carved into unique and complex shapes, and will hold its shape for repeated use as composite plugs.

Model making
From artist’s scale models to larger-than-life movie props, TRYMER polyisocyanurate foam is a model maker’s dream medium. The uniform, closed-cell structure of the foam enables carving, shaping, easy painting and a fine surface finish.

Surfboard blanks
STYROFOAM extruded polystyrene is highly valued by surfboard manufacturers for its moisture resistance, strength, durability and light weight.

Oncology boards
Oncology boards are molded supports designed for accurate diagnostic imaging (e.g., X-rays) during radiation treatments. The boards, cushioned by STYROFOAM Panel Core, help immobilize and ensure proper positioning of the patient for enhanced precision in imaging and treatment delivery.
Additional applications include:
- Fiber- and glass-fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP and GRP) panels
- Insulated ceiling panels
- Architectural wall panels and fascia systems
- In-fill panels
- Prosthetic molds
