Eagle Centre, Derby

Flat roofing specialists Briggs Roofing and Cladding have installed over 20,000 square metres of Dow STYROFOAM™ Solution, ROOFMATE™ SL-X insulation boards during the redevelopment of the Eagle Centre in Derby.

The £300 million scheme will bring 72,000 square meters of new retail space to the city centre with the aim of completely regenerating the area. With over 100 new shops, a food court seating 800 and parking for 2000 cars, developer Westfield required high-performance materials that would give trouble-free installation and a long service life.

Blue extruded foamed polystyrene ROOFMATE SL-X insulation boards from Dow Building Solutions were used to insulate the various roof areas and rooftop car park. An inverted warm roof build-up was used for the roof areas. With this the ROOFMATE SL-X boards were laid on the concrete deck waterproofing layer with either concrete pavers or aggregate on top to provide a robust and durable top surface. The waterproofing layer is thus protected against impact damage and possible UV degradation.

For the rooftop car park the boards' high compressive strength is a vital factor in the build-up designed to support the anticipated vehicle traffic loads. A reinforced concrete screed was installed on top of the insulation with a final layer of asphalt laid to provide the necessary waterproofing and car park wearing surface.

Briggs Roofing & Cladding Contracts Manager Steve Chawner commented: "ROOFMATE was specified because of its compressive strength and good insulation properties. However, from the contractor's point of view, the fact that the boards are so easy to work with offers the greatest advantage - ROOFMATE is simply user friendly. Ease of handling and installation is really important to the roofer. On the whole, it allowed the roofing process to run pretty smoothly - which is crucial on a job of this size and complexity."

User friendliness is one of ROOFMATE SL-X's key attributes. The closed-cell structure of the boards allows them to be easily cut and shaped with conventional hand tools, whilst the material is clean and free from dust and skin irritants. It is also chemically resistant to most commonly occurring construction materials such as concrete and bitumen based waterproofing materials which is vital on a job of this type.

As Building Regulations continue to demand even more stringent U-values, STYROFOAM insulation products provide increasingly effective solutions for improving the thermal performance of buildings. Compressive strength can be tailored to accommodate a wide range of imposed loads whilst the low thermal conductivity allows high levels of insulation to be achieved with minimum thickness.
