Kowloon MTR Station, Hong Kong

project

The Kowloon Mass Transit Railway (MTR) station had a podium high above the ground supported by huge concrete columns. A total of 4,000 m3 of ROOFMATE* Brand Insulation was used to reduce the total weight of the podium structure. This application is called Lightweight Fill and is very commonly used as weight reduction of heavy building and civil engineering structures.

design details

Boards of ROOFMATE Insulation were bonded together to make blocks up to 1.0m thick at a local distributor's plant. Those blocks were installed over roofing membrane, between concrete block walls. Then concrete paving came as finish.

ROOFMATE Insulation weighs only 1/50 - 1/70 as much as sand, soil, pebbles or concrete but is strong enough to support loads as heavy as 30 metric tons per m2. Its high resistance to moisture over the long term is also a key in this application.

This cost-saving design was achieved by minimizing supporting columns with longer spans. This same concept has also been used for roads and bridges planned at the construction sites where the ground is too weak to support additional heavy loads.
