Novel polymers ranging from soft rubbers to hard plastics have been produced by the cationic copolymerization of low-saturation soybean oil with styrene and Divinylbenzene. Fire-resistant polymers have been produced when the benzylic chloride of Vinylbenzyl chloride is replaced with either oxyphosphorated or silicated compounds. UV-resistant polymers have been produced through the copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and VBC functionalized with hydroxybenzophenone. Polyelectrolytes, polymeric surfactants, polymeric mordants, photosensitive polymers, and photoconductive polymers have all been synthesized using Vinylbenzyl chloride as a comonomer or by producing a specialty monomer through substitution of the benzylic chloride.
