Winter 2010

Dear readers,

I am pleased to announce the launch of the Silage Advisory Centre(SilAC), a new industry initiative to support UK and Irish farmers in their decision-making in silage production, forage and grassland management.

As a founding member of SilAC, we at Dow believe that there is certainly room to maximise forage and grassland management systems using baled silage more effectively, and the Silage Advisory Centre will be an important step in supporting the industry with independent advice and tools that can further improve forage management on farm in a profitable way.

One of the first developments from the Silage Advisory Centre is independent trials run at Aberystwyth University looking at the use of red clover silage as an alternative forage option which can offer nutritional benefits and cost savings over grass silage. The articles below summarise the key findings and contain detailed comparative analyses into cost and performance as well as practical tips on harvesting and feeding such a crop effectively.

Ensiling red clover
Growing and ensiling protein and energy crops on-farm has many benefits.  Not only does it give farmers more control over feed costs during autumn and winter, but research shows that different forages also increase feed intake and improve production response. Read more
