Economic Prosperity

The economic prosperity of a city, region, province or country is largely dependent on the amount and type of business being conducted there. Payroll, taxes and corporate purchases all contribute significantly to economic health, and indirectly to infrastructure, civic institutions and culture. In this section, we share some key indicators of our impact on the area around the Prentiss site.

Capital Expenditures

Dow operations at Prentiss spent about $1.3 million CDN on capital expenditures in 2005.

Production

The polyethylene plant at Prentiss manufactured totals near its nameplate production capacity of 1.3 billion pounds.

Local Purchasing

As part of a global company, Dow at Prentiss continually seeks the best way of doing business, taking matters such as cost and availability of supplies and services into consideration. We make every effort to purchase local supplies and labour whenever possible, and worked with local chambers of commerce and economic development organizations to inform them of potential opportunities for area businesses to supply our site. However, we must sometimes go outside the local supply area in order to make purchases of sufficient scale and availability.

Payroll

Payroll for Dow Chemical employees in 2005 was $10.5 million.

Taxes

Taxes paid by a company to various authorities are an important part of our economic impact in that region. Dow at Prentiss paid about $1.5 million CDN in taxes to the local municipality in 2005. As a whole, the Prentiss site paid approximately $3.2 million CDN in taxes in 2005.
