2015 Sustainability Goals

<Attain>ability logo

The setting of challenging goals is an important tool for Dow to structurally improve our performance. Both internally and externally, our company has a reputation for not only setting tough targets but also for inspiring our employees and contractors to convert those aspirations into real, measurable achievements. At Dow, we call this phenomenon “Attainability.”

Dow set its 2005 EH&S Goals in 1996 based on existing environment, health and safety (EH&S) parameters. The target date for completion was year-end 2005. We have met our targets in several areas, exceeded some and come very close in most of the others. We are proud of what we have achieved over the past decade and are now focused on new, broader and more aggressive sustainability goals for 2015. Elsewhere in this report, you will be able to see, in detail, how we in Pittsburg Operations have contributed to Dow’s performance.

If the 10-year span from 1996 to 2005 has taught us anything, it’s that our stakeholders have changed and so have their expectations. In setting the 2015 Sustainability Goals, we have sought the opinions and held dialogue sessions with multiple stakeholder groups, including our employees, members of the communities where we have operations and influential non-governmental organizations (NGOs), to understand how their expectations of us have changed in the past decade.

What we learned from interacting with our stakeholder groups is that we must take a completely different approach to developing our next set of goals — an approach that will lead not only to respect for what Dow chooses to focus on, but also, through Dow’s influence, respect for the entire chemical industry.

Collaborate, Innovate, Elevate

Dow’s 2015 Sustainability Goals have three main areas of focus. First, we will seek to collaborate with the communities where we operate to set and achieve meaningful goals that contribute to their success. In addition to continuing to stretch ourselves towards operational excellence, we also ultimately want to make a sustainable contribution to the environment and value of life within communities in which Dow has a presence.

Second, we will redouble our commitment to product stewardship and innovation, to provide products, technology and information to provide benefits to society while reducing the impact on human health and the environment. We will also proactively seek to improve confidence that our products are responsibly managed throughout their life cycle and to innovate, creating new products that will make a lasting, positive impact on the world.

Third, we will continue to focus on efficient energy use and are committed to being part of the solution for the climate change issue, to elevate our understanding of our impact on the world in which we live.

Taken individually, the goals reflect the changing expectations of our stakeholders. Collectively, they represent Dow’s view on what it will take to Set the Standard for Sustainability in the next decade.
