Hurricane Katrina — Responding to Tragedy

Hammer, Gloves, Lumber

In late August, the gulf coast region was greatly impacted by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In the long days and weeks following the disaster, the people of Dow came together to offer help and give hope in a critical time of need.

Just one day after the tragic storm, Dow pledged $3 million in aid to those affected by Hurricane Katrina. The donation consisted of a $1 million immediate cash donation to the American Red Cross; $1 million match to employee and retire donations to a qualifying charitable organization; and $1 million in products and technology to the long term reconstruction efforts.

When disaster strikes the nature of need is unpredictable. But Dow and our employees were there, helping in hundreds of ways to offer relief in unexpected ways. Employees and retirees volunteered at local shelters, donated more than 100 boxes of supplies, built showers with hot water and opened their homes to displaced friends and families.

In the aftermath of destruction, Dow provided school supplies and monetary donations for school uniforms for displaced children; provided various supplies for shelters; and provided tents for relief workers. On several occasions Dow employees cooked and served hot meals to evacuees, Red Cross relief workers and volunteers, as well as Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries employees.

Dow people stepped up in a time of tragedy and pulled together for a region in need, showing once again their commitment to communities around the globe.
