Community Story — 47 Building: A Cornerstone of Dow History
In late 2005, The Dow Chemical Company decided to close and demolish one of the most visible landmarks within the company’s Michigan Operations site and an important cornerstone in Dow’s history — the 47 Building.
Dow has always focused on moving forward and the company’s decision to close the 47 Building reflects its commitment to innovation and continuous improvement.
The building was constructed in 1916 to house Dow’s headquarters and business offices. In the building’s 90-year history, several major construction and renovation projects were completed to meet Dow’s growing demands for space and resources. The 47 Building remained the company’s corporate headquarters until the mid-1960’s, but the departure of Dow’s corporate leadership did not diminish 47 Building’s importance. From 1969 forward it continued to house leaders at Dow’s Michigan Operations. By 2005, the building was actually a combination of three structures, not to mention several major additions.
Now, in the first decade of the 21st century, Dow is a diversified chemical company offering products and services to customers in more than 175 countries. The 47 Building played a key role in this rise to global leadership and holds an important place in Dow history and in the memories of Dow people.
