About Us
Dow's Louisiana Operations began in 1956 with the purchase of four plantations in Iberville and West Baton Rouge parishes. Abundant natural resources, an excellent transportation network, deep water port, easy access to the Mississippi River, a dedicated workforce and available land were major reasons for Dow coming to Louisiana. Our 1,500-acre integrated facility near Plaquemine and brine operations in Grand Bayou now comprise one of the largest petrochemical facilities in Louisiana. Dow is also the largest employer in Iberville and West Baton Rouge parishes.
The site's 23 production units manufacture more than 50 different basic and specialty chemical products that are shipped worldwide to serve as the building blocks for hundreds of products used everyday. Some of the consumer products include soaps, detergents, food additives, cosmetics, shampoos, diaper liners, non-oil base paints, pharmaceuticals and herbicides.
Celebrating 50 years in 2006, Louisiana Operations has been a part of the surrounding community, providing jobs, economic stability, and striving to maintain and enhance the quality of life. The company's annual economic impact includes:
- $72 million in state and local taxes
- $117 million in employee and contractor payroll
- $63 million in local purchases
- $1.1 million in community contributions
Committed to the principles of sustainable development, Dow and its employees seek to balance economic, environmental and social responsibility as we invest in our community and encourage them to invest in themselves. Through the annual contributions of $1 million and more than 20,000 hours of volunteer time by approximately 600 Dow employees, community needs are being met through Dow's Community Grants, Educational Enhancement Grants, Habitat for Humanity and United Way, as well as other programs.
"Safety and environment first.pounds second" is the practice of every employee at Dow and is evident by our reductions in toxic air emissions since 1988 and by our designation as an OSHA Star site for safety performance.
Louisiana Operations has been the recipient of several awards that recognize its commitments to sustainable development. Some of these include: Louisiana's Lantern Award (recognizing Dow sites around the state); Nature Conservancy Award; Keep America Beautiful Award; Greater Baton Rouge Coalition for Good Growth Award; United Way Superstar Award; Volunteer Baton Rouge's Company of the Year; Governor's Environmental Leadership Award.
