Celebrations in Thailand

beach clean up

When Dow and other companies in Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate joined together with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, more than 400 employees, students, and community members joined the event cleaning up four kilometers of local beach at Rayong.
A typical Dow success story in the region is our integrated site at Map Ta Phut in Thailand, which produces high-end plastics and chemical products for the region.

In 2003, Dow celebrated 25 years of polystyrene production in Thailand (originally at a plant in Bangkok) and also the tenth anniversary of the Map Ta Phut site, which operates as a joint venture with the Siam Cement Group of companies.

Dow's long term commitment to Thailand is demonstrated by the joint cumulative capital investment of nearly $US 420 million (or over 12 billion Thai baht) and by the determination of Dow and our joint venture partner to make Map Ta Phut a showcase for investment in growth economies.

At a business level the use of Six Sigma methodologies and ISO plant accreditation have yielded cumulative savings of more than $US 10 million over five years and substantial increases in product satisfaction from major customers such as Sanyo and Thomson manufacturing.

In the field of Environment, Health and Safety, Map Ta Phut achieved 24 consecutive months of zero distribution incidents and a remarkable 18 months without any personal injuries, while Dow in Thailand has received external recognition for continuous efforts in environmental stewardship, including the prestigious Ministry of Industry Award.

Investing in the community is also strong, with programmes including an “eco” drinking water system for a nearby youth camp; product donations to help make artificial limbs; and partnership with the American Corporations for Thailand to help disadvantaged youth.

Working with our joint-venture partner, Dow is very proud of the success in Thailand and looks to reproduce that success elsewhere in Asia-Pacific.
