Our Goals
Dow's commitment to Security & Public Safety is reflected in the 2015 Sustainability Goals for protection of human health and the environment. By year-end 2015, we will:
- Have fewer than 130 Leaks, Breaks and Spills (LOPCs) at all Dow sites and businesses combined, with no more than 15 Category 2 incidents, eliminating Category 1 incidents.
- Reduce the number of hazardous material transportation LOPCs by 75 percent, and eliminate highly hazardous material releases.
- Reduce process safety incidents by 75 percent and the severity rate by 95 percent, based on the 2005 baseline.
- Re-use 300 million pounds of by-products as raw materials instead of disposing of them as waste.
Our Actions
In addition to our focus on public and environmental safety, Dow is taking further security actions in a number of ways. Our efforts include:
- Advocating for strong security and manufacturing safety standards and practices.
- Demonstrating our commitment through the global implementation of the Responsible Care Security Code.
- Working closely with communities and local responders so that we can all successfully respond to every type of risk.
- Participating in joint industry-community drills to test and constantly improve our communication and response capabilities.
- Enlisting the expertise of security professionals and engineers who understand how our products are made to conduct rigorous, externally-recognized, risk-based assessments of the vulnerability of all Dow manufacturing facilities worldwide.
- Expanding our comprehensive risk assessment programs to evaluate security for the transportation of raw materials and products.
- Working closely with our logistics partners to assess the effectiveness of their safety and security programs, and working with industry associations and government agencies to evaluate innovative approaches to all aspects of transportation security.
- Integrating cyber security and information protection into our overall security efforts, and helping the rest of the chemical sector to integrate cyber security guidelines with national and international goals and plans.
