Safe Handling & Use
Dow is committed to the safe handling, use and storage of its products. For over a decade, we have embraced and advocated Responsible Care®†, a voluntary, industry-wide commitment to safely handle our chemicals from inception in the laboratory to ultimate disposal. We employ rigorous quality control procedures, including, where appropriate, current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) guidelines that govern every aspect of production and shipment of products regulated by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Overview of Handling and Use of Propylene Glycols
The information given here is for use as a general overview; it may not be complete, and some uses may have been overlooked. Please obtain copies of safety data sheets (SDS) for specific handling and use information about propylene glycols. Visit our Library to read and download SDS for Dow’s propylene glycols offering.
With low oral toxicity, PG is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 21 CFR § 184.1666, for use as a direct food additive under the conditions prescribed. It is approved by the U.S. FDA for certain indirect food additive uses. PG is used in cosmetics and as an excipient in pharmaceuticals.
Monopropylene glycol (PG), dipropylene glycol (DPG) and tripropylene glycol (TPG) do not normally irritate skin or eyes. Therefore, any irritation should be transient.
MPG, DPG and TPG have low vapor pressures, suggesting that inhalation exposure would not be expected under normal circumstances.
Dow offers its Propylene Glycol USP/EP (PG USP/EP) grade of MPG for foods, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and other applications involving possible ingestion or absorption through the skin, and its Propylene Glycol Industrial Grade (PGI) of MPG for other uses.
Dow offers its Dipropylene Glycol LO+ (DPG LO+) for cosmetics, personal care and other applications involving possible ingestion or absorption through the skin, and Dipropylene Glycol Regular Grade (DPG) for other uses.
PG USP/EP has a shelf life of two years when stored below 40°C (104°F) in closed containers away from sources of ultraviolet (UV) light.
PGI, DPG and DPG LO+ have a shelf life of one year when stored below 40°C (104°F) in closed containers away from sources of UV light.
TPG and TPG Ac have a shelf life of six months when stored below 40°C (104°F) in closed containers away from sources of UV light.
