Polypropylene Glycols and Copolymers

Polypropylene glycols are approved for a variety of food additive uses, both direct and indirect. They are typically used in fermentation foam control, as a defoamer in direct, indirect, and secondary food additives, and in a variety of food processing applications. Certain polypropylene glycols are also Kosher certified.

Food Packaging

AMPLIFY™ Functional Polymers

The family of AMPLIFY™ Functional Polymers is used primarily in adhesive applications for sealants, peelable seals, and tie-layers in food packaging. Films offer low-barrier “breathability,” as well as flexibility and abuse resistance. Packaging applications include beverage, dairy and cheese, meat and poultry, and snack and confection; also for wrap and tubing for commercial packaging.

Epoxy

Epoxy resins are used as coatings in metal cans/packaging to keep metal ions from entering food and beverages, preserving the taste and shelf life of the products.

HYPOD™ Polyolefin Dispersions

PRIMACOR™ copolymers

PRIMACOR™ Copolymers are easy to process ethylene acrylic acid resins and offer terrific adhesion to various substrates. Together with excellent toughness and flexibility, they can be used for a wide array of packaging applications, such as flexible packaging pouches and aluminum-based toothpaste tubes.

UCAR™ Solution Vinyl Resins

UCAR™ Solution Vinyl Resins have been safely used in direct food packaging for decades, are FDA approved and meet EU regulations for direct food contact. These resins offer excellent low taint properties and are high purity with no low molecular weight monomers, additives or surfactants to migrate into a product and affect its taste and odor. Applications include coatings for food and beverage cans/lids, heat seal lacquers for aluminum lidding stock for blister packs and food packaging, and gravure printing inks for retortable pouches.

SARAN™ Resins

SARAN™ Resins - Coextruded made with SARAN PVDC Resins and innovative multi-layer cast and blown film technology from Dow provide clear, barrier film packaging with a combination of excellent moisture, oxygen, flavor and aroma barriers regardless of temperature or humidity. Films made using SARAN Resins are widely used in food packaging for processed meats and cheeses, case-ready meats, sausage chubs and retort pouches (they can be used as a clear barrier film for retort applications with no barrier degradation after retort). SARAN products can be used in lamination processes for dry food packaging such as cereals; cookies, crackers and snack foods; coffee; rice; and pastas.

SARANEX™ Barrier Films

SARANEX™ Barrier Films are multilayer coextruded films made with a core of SARAN™ Resin laminated to polyolefin skins. They have excellent moisture barrier resistance and good clarity for use in agricultural mulch film applications.

VERSIFY™ Plastomers and Elastomers

The unique molecular architecture of VERSIFY™ plastomers and elastomers provides films, fibers, and molded parts with an outstanding combination of excellent optics, sealing and hot tack performance, plus elasticity, flexibility, softness and compatibility in blends. Oxygenated Solvents

DOWANOL™ PM, DPM, Butyl CELLOSOLVE™ and Butyl CARBITOL™ are commonly used as inert ingredients in agricultural pesticides. Dow Oxygenated Solvents offer a broad range of properties, including: high solvency, increased stabilization, controlled evaporation and aid in the emulsifing of non-water soluble active ingredients.

HYPOD™ Polyolefin Dispersions

HYPOD™ polyolefin dispersions put high molecular weight polyolefins into a water-based dispersion to enable customers to create differentiated products or structures, eliminate solvent-related issues and/or lower systems costs. HYPOD Polyolefin Dispersions can be used in food packaging and are particularly suitable for pet food bags, pizza boxes and sandwich wrappers.

Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM)
North America

Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM) is used as a starting material in the manufacture of films for food packaging to retain freshness and reduce odor transfer. It's also a common ingredient in the production of polyvinyl acetate chewing gum base, which keeps gum soft and chewable.

DOWTHERM™ Heat Transfer Fluids

DOWTHERM™, DOWFROST™ and DOWCAL™ Inhibited Glycol-based Heat Transfer Fluids are used to chill or freeze food and beverage products during processing according to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines.

FILMTEC™ membranes

FILMTEC™ reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes can be used for a variety of food applications, including whey desalting, lactose concentration, maple sap concentration, and purification of water used in beverage manufacturing.

Propylene Glycols

Modifies Carbohydrates (starches); PG USP/EP is used as a humectant and stabilizer, solvent in flavor solutions, for extractions and food additives, and in heat transfer fluids for food and beverage chilling/freezing applications. Propylene Oxide

Propylene Oxide is a versatile chemical intermediate used in polyether polyols, propylene glycols and propylene glycol ethers. Propylene Glycol Alginates are made from the reaction of propylene oxide with sea weed (sea kelp), which contain alginic acid, are used in a wide range of applications, such as food grade thickeners, emulsifiers, stabilizers for acid food products and foam stabilizers in beer.

UCON™ Fluids and Lubricants

UCON™ Fluids and Lubricants include food-grade synthetic lubricants suitable for use with equipment used in food and beverage processing operations.
