ACRYSOL™ DR-110 Thickener, is a specially designed rheology modifier that provides low cost and high performance in high PVC economy latex paints when diluted with water and/or colorants.

ACRYSOL DR-110 Thickener has very good compatibility with formulating ingredients and is well suited for colored paints providing excellent color acceptance and anti-color floating paint performance.

ACRYSOL DR-110 Thickener can be also be used as co-thickener along with other rheology modifiers including: cellulosic thickeners, hydrophobically modified cellulosic thickeners, ASE, HASE and HEUR- types.

ACRYSOL DR-110 Thickener is easy to handle and incorporate into paint. It could be incorporated either at the mill base stage, before or after addition of pigments and extenders to give consistency to the mill base or at the let down stage. While adding at letdown stage, it is recommended to dilute 1:1 with water and added slowly in order to prevent any shocking to the latex.

Formulating Guidelines


ACRYSOL™ DR-110 Thickener offers the latex paint manufacturer easy handling and flexibility in both the order of addition and the method of incorporation compared to cellulosic and hydrophobically modified cellulosic thickeners. It can be added to the mill-base, to the let-down, or as a post addition without affecting performance properties, as long as the paint system is sufficiently alkaline during the incorporation and sufficient mixing is available. Supplied as a low viscosity emulsion, ACRYSOL DR-110 Thickener is easy to pump or pour and therefore very suitable for bulk handling and/or automatic metering systems.

Order of Addition

ACRYSOL™ DR-110 Thickener can be added at different stages as long as the formulation contains enough base to neutralize the thickener and provide additional base to adjust the pH.

These stages include:

  1. In the mill base stage, before the addition of pigments extenders
  2. In the mill base after the pigments and extender
  3. In the letdown stage as the final ingredient

It is recommended that ACRYSOL DR-110 Thickener be diluted with 1:1 with water if added in the letdown stage. Adding ACRYSOL DR-110 Thickener is as the final ingredient in the letdown is a convenient method in the lab to determine how much thickener is required to achieve the desired viscosity. Also adding as the last ingredient in the plant is a good method for making final viscosity adjustments.

pH Control

Paint pH control is important with ACRYSOL™ DR-110 Thickener in order to activate the thickening mechanism. It is recommended that the pH for the paint system should between 9.0–9.5 before ACRYSOL DR-110 Thickener is added to the formulation and final paint’s pH is maintained between 8.0–9.5. Paint pH can be increased by adding based such as ammonium hydroxide or dimethylamino-types bases such an AMP-95™. If the mill base contains extenders such as Calcium Carbonate, the alkaline nature in the mill base may be sufficient to achieve thickening, but should be determined.

Dispersing Agents

ACRYSOL™ DR-110 Thickener formulates well with a wide range of dispersants. Polyacid-type dispersants such as: OROTAN™ 1288, 963 and 1850E Dispersants provides the best overall compatibility to for achieving stability and color acceptance performance.


Since ACRYSOL™ DR-110 Thickener is very efficient at building KU viscosity and is very compatible with a wide range of raw materials. ACRYSOL DR-110 Thickener can be used in formulations containing other thickener chemistries such as HEC, HMHEC, ASE, HASE, and HEUR-type to build a desired rheology profile. It is recommended if HEC or HMHEC thickeners are used in the formulation mill base, ACRYSOL DR-110 Thickener should be added as the final ingredient in the letdown. When ACRYSOL DR-110 Thickener formulated along with ICI viscosity builder rheology modifiers in the letdown stage, ACRYSOL DR-110 Thickener should also be added as the last ingredient.

Store products in tightly closed original containers at temperatures recommended on the product label.


Dispose in accordance with all local, state (provincial) and federal regulations. Empty containers may contain hazardous residues. This material and its container must be disposed in a safe and legal manner.
